  • 3 lbs boneless beef shoulder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tsp molasses
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp Five Spice Powder
  • 1/2 tsp white pepper
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp honey

Instructions

  1. Cut the beef shoulder into two long strips for even marination.
  2. In a bowl, combine sugar, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, hoisin sauce, molasses, salt, Five Spice Powder, white pepper, and sesame oil. Whisk until smooth.
  3. Rub the marinade over the beef strips and refrigerate overnight.
  4. Preheat the oven or grill to 500°F.
  5. Line a baking sheet with foil and place a metal rack on top.
  6. Roast the marinated beef on the rack for 25 minutes.
  7. Flip the beef, baste with reserved marinade mixed with honey, and roast for another 10 minutes.
  8. Baste again and roast for an additional 5 minutes until caramelized.
  9. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
